Microsoft

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Lots of interns around, really good events put on my Microsoft, and good nightlife scene. Return offers are very likely, which is a huge plus!

What I wish was different

Onboarding was rough, and organization wasn't great throughout the internship

Advice

Don't stress too much, your performance isn't scrutinized a ton. Enjoy the summer!

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

They gave me projects that I was interested in and my team was very friendly. The intern program at Microsoft is very nice and they spoil the interns.

What I wish was different

My manager assumed I was a master's student and gave me a lot of difficult work. I ended up working many 10 hour days.

Advice

If you're at a big company like Microsoft, take the time to network both within and outside of your organization. Full time employees are eager to share their experiences and you can learn a lot.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Best tech internship experience in my opinion. My manager and team were phenomenal, I worked on real work the team was working on. I had all the support needed, and Microsoft genuinely cares more about you growing as an individual and your manager supports you through your own career growth even if it means being on a different team. That happened to me this past summer, and I will be returning to Microsoft in the Artificial Intelligence and Research organization, which was my goal. Microsoft pays the best in tech when when adjusting to zero taxes and cost of living in Seattle, and there is so much opportunity for growth. Also interns are spoiled in so many ways. Major highlights are the surprise private intern-only concert, and this year we got to see Sean Paul, Ella Mai, and Kyle. All interns in my division also got to keep $350 Surface Headphones for free.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, I had the best summer ever.

Advice

Microsoft is the best place for self-motivated people, who are do-ers. Your experience will be so much more rewarding and you will reach new heights if you want to see yourself grow and work for it. Take an active approach towards getting to where you want to be next.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

It was a great experience in a brand new location. It has a smaller team feel with the backing of a large and global organization. I honestly had just as great a time in Raleigh as I did in Redmond.

What I wish was different

I wish I knew others in the Raleigh area before going in.

Advice

I would say be brave and apply to here or in Redmond. I had a great time at all Microsoft internships.

What I wish was different

There was no team matching of any sort -- the org that the team that interviews you belongs to, is the org you will be under, regardless of how good a fit it is.

Garage Intern

June - August 2017 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I can't speak highly enough about my experience at Microsoft. I grew as a software engineer, as a member of a team, and as a person. I learned how to quickly learn new technologies and apply those technologies immediately to developing real projects. I learned how collaboratively build good software, using version control software effectively and adopting best practices for creating robust, readable, maintainable code. I also was able to play a strong role in designing the project my team worked on. I learned how to conduct user research, to put the consumer first, and to consider what I am making, for whom, why, and how to best create something the user will love. I was able to improve drastically on my interpersonal and professional skills. My managers and teammates were incredibly supportive, and I learned to listen to others' ideas, to accept and seek out feedback, and to foster a positive team dynamic conducive to a productive work environment.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a bit more mentorship for people who didn't have as much software engineering experience. I definitely felt in over my head during the first part of the internship, though that's largely my fault for not seeking out mentorship from my teammates and managers.

Advice

Dive head first into Microsoft. Work hours aren't crazy, but stay late: not to work, but to hang out with friends. Chill in the VR room and play video games with your teammates. Go out and grab dinner with other people in the office. The more you put into Microsoft, it's people, and it's culture, the more you'll get out of it. Trust me, it's tons of fun. On a more professional note: ask questions. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know something. Nobody's going to think you're clueless, and everyone around you will be happy to lend a helping hand if you feel like you're in over your head. Owning up to your shortcomings and seeking out help and feedback is the best way for you to improve.

pod structure (worked with 2 other interns), exposure to diverse roles/fields within the company
