Mechanical Engineering Intern

June 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

I was apart of the manufacturing department for crystals (Crystal MFG). This department gave interns alot of opportunities to be involved, and to get the experience that they desired. Alot of the projects were interesting, and a great learning experience. Overall, this opportunity gave me a great insight on the manufacturing field.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, sometimes the technician staff will be short-handed, and as a result... interns are called up to do technician work. This type of work can be extremely repetitive, and not relevant to the position that you applied for. If the intern does not oppose this type of work, they can be stuck with it their entire internship duration. Also, even though the projects that interns work on is great, often they are not implemented. This separates intern's work from the "real work" that is being done.

Advice

For one, I would recommend that this department expand on hiring more technicians, they are needed! And for any incoming interns for the crystals MFG group, make sure to ask questions when you have them, and to request additional work if you want more exposure in certain areas! And of course, if you do no like something, be vocal! Otherwise, you can end up in the cleanroom with technician duties, and you will learn nothing!
